Taking Your Dog to a Calgary Off-Leash Park for the First Time — 10 Tips

Your first off-leash park visit in Calgary can be exciting and nerve-wracking in equal measure. These 10 tips will set you up for success.

1. Start at a Fenced Park

Don't go straight to Nose Hill. Start at a fenced park where escape is impossible: Sue Higgins, Auburn Bay, East Village, or Connaught. The fence is your safety net while you learn your dog's off-leash behaviour.

2. Go at a Quiet Time

Weekday mornings (10 AM-2 PM) have the fewest dogs. This gives your dog a gentler introduction than a chaotic Saturday morning.

3. Keep It Short

20-30 minutes is plenty for a first visit. Leave on a positive note rather than waiting for something to go wrong.

4. Bring High-Value Treats

You want your dog to learn that coming back to you is the BEST thing that happens at the park. Use treats that beat whatever the park offers — cheese, hot dogs, freeze-dried liver.

5. Watch Body Language

Learn to read your dog:

  • ✅ Loose, wiggly body = happy, relaxed
  • ✅ Play bow (front down, rear up) = invitation to play
  • ⚠️ Stiff posture = stressed or alert
  • ⚠️ Hard staring = potential conflict
  • ❌ Raised hackles + stiff tail = arousal/aggression
  • 6. Don't Bring Your Phone (Mentally)

Your first few visits require full attention. Watch your dog, watch other dogs, learn the dynamics. Social media can wait.

    7. It's Okay to Leave

If the energy feels wrong, too many dogs, or your dog seems stressed — leave. There's no shame in trying again another day.

    8. Don't Force Interactions

Some dogs need time to warm up. Let your dog set the pace for meeting other dogs. Don't drag them toward groups or force introductions.

    9. Know the Recall Rule

If your dog won't come when called, they shouldn't be off-leash. Use a long training lead (30 feet) until recall is solid. This gives your dog freedom while maintaining your control.

    10. Bring Cleanup Supplies

Waste bags (at least 3), water, a towel for the car, and your leash. The leash is required even at off-leash parks for entry/exit transitions.
